Background
I graduated from the University of Alberta with a Masters in Economics in 2022.
Only recently has coding and computer science become an important part of
an Economic students studies.
Where ever I could, I took courses from the department that focused on coding.
However, that was often limited to statistical analysis in outdated software like
Stata, which is only used in academia.
Knowing I didn't want to stay in academia forever, I knew I had more to learn.
I began with R to form a backbone for data analysis, and I was hooked.
However, I quickly realized R was only part of the story. To pull data, I learned SQL.
To present data and interact with users, I learned Power BI. To build general
applications I learned Python. To host these applications, I learned Linux and
docker.
Current
I currently work for the Government of Alberta as a Senior Data Scientist in Treasury
Board and Finance, leading a data science team.
My primary responsibility is leading statistical and actuarial
research by the team into Alberta's auto insurance market, and presenting it
to a varied audience such as the public, government, and the broad insurance
industry.
Even if I may never use it in a job, I like to learn, and I love a challenge.
I built this website in HTML and CSS, I am currently interested in learning
low level languages like Rust.
